Yes, I laugh at the obvious, trying "to determine what God is thinking" is just not possible... Better to listen & read!


Thank you for this message of peace. I especially reflected on the passage of "all people coming to Him" as another directive for us to welcome all regardless of "race, color, or religion" which is important as we continue to fight for fair, unbiased treatment of all during these often troubling times. At mention of the cross, I have often wondered why God has given some a greater "cross to bear" than others and yet those same 'sufferers' seem not to suffer at all, but rather they often seem happy and cheerful. So today my question is: "Does God appreciate more those to whom He has given a heavier cross and does He then give them greater comfort and peace?

You know, Janis, I've had similar wonderings myself. In fact, I would guess most of us have thought in this way at one time or another, trying to read the signs of our lives to determine what God is thinking. The problem is that we are really bad sign readers; God's demeanor toward us just can't be easily read from our circumstances. That's why God is so verbal; rather than leaving it to us to read the signs, God speaks to us over and over again through scripture, sacrament, and sermon, whether it's the public Sermon on Sunday morning, or one of the informal sermons spoken to us by other Christians throughout the week.
